how to check mobile dead or not if battery not availble?

Hi ,
I recently got interested in learning how to repair mobile phone and i have found six-seven of my\family previous phones and wanted to use them to learn mobile repairing. i am a student so i don't have money to purchase battery for all of them and to check whether they work or not are are they dead. is there any way to check whether they are dead or working? i have thrown out all the batteries as they had become fat except k790i. i don't have their chargers either. i am trying to save money for dc supply could someone tell me where to purchase from online?.i have purchased a multimeter and t4,t5,t6 screwdriver.
