The Department of Telecom has sought Cabinet’s approval to give more power to the telecom regulator including the ability to impose penalty on erring operators. Currently, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) does not have the power to impose a penalty. According to a draft note prepared by the DoT, the telecom regulator could also be entrusted with the job to ensure efficient usage of spectrum by mobile players. “TRAI needs to be functionally and administratively strengthened to enable it to discharge its responsibilities in a fast changing telecommunication sector,” stated the draft note.
