    Operator Logos Explained

The operator logo is the picture on top of your phone screen, in most cases is the name of your operator.

How to change it for a nice picture? You can do this by diferent ways:

First create this folder if you dont have it:

    C:\System\Apps\Phone\Oplogo\

The operator logo will be stored on it...)

You can use FExplorer (any jpeg/bmp, no resize), seleQ (any image, it will resize it) --> select the image you want be operator logo, select options-file-set as operator logo.

You can make your own logo:

The operator logos have the following format:

    COUNTRYCODE_NETWORKCODE_SUBNETCODE.BMP

    For example, for Spain:

    Amena: 214 03 -> 214_3_0.BMP
    Movistar: 214 07 -> 214_7_0.BMP
    Vodafone: 214 01 -> 214_1_0.BMP

    In the PHILIPPINES:
    Smart: 515 01
    Globe: 515 02

The size for bmp is 97 x 25 pixels.

Also, you can store diferent logos for diferent operators. For example if you change your SIM to other operator, you will see the other logo, or if you travel to other countries, you can store diferent logos for the operators in this countries.

You have a list of country codes and network codes here , just ignore the first "0" in network code if any.

If you want to delete the logo to restore the original (name of the operator) just delete the bmp file from c:\system\apps\phone\oplogo.

If you have your keylock activated just press the on/off button to turn on your backlight
to look at the time when it's dark without having to unlock the keypad.

Start your text message (sms) with *0# and you'll recieve and sms back
with details on when the message was recieved by the recipient.

Start up in Safe Mode so no 'auto start' apps will be running:
To make sure that no memory-resident programs start when you reboot your phone,
hold down the pencil key when you turn on the phone and hold it on untill you have to enter your PIN code.
(When you have trouble booting up the phone with the MMC in it because it got corrupted for some reason, this trick will
almost always let you boot up the phone so you can remove the latest installed app which might have caused the
problem or if your phone is "unrepairable" you can still back up your important data before you do a format.)

    * 'send command' fails new firmware
with some new firmware, some users have reported that the 'send command' (thru bluetooth, IR, ...) fails; it's due to a 'copyrigth protection' introduced in the new OS (!!!!), this happens only with some kind of files (eg: .SIS), in such case, simply rename the file (eg: wtih .SIS_ ) before trying to send them.

    Can't Uninstall Applications via Manager?

    When you cant uninstall an application(most of the time Java games) using the Manager function of the phone, then do this;

    1. Install FExplorer.

    2. Launch it and goto the path/folder of the Application. I'm assuming you have install it to the MMC so the path would be something like,

    E:\system\apps

and you will see lots of folders in there that is only labelled by numbers(for Java games/apps) or the name of the application. Go though them one by one. Open the text file in that folder to exactly know the name of the application in that particular folder if you dont see any icons or familiar name.

    3. Then if its the correct folder, "move-out" of the folder, click on Options>File>Delete.

    4. Then goto the Manager to uninstall it if its still listed.

    5. Reboot.

I know IR is old skool but hey, it comes handy at times especially when BT acts-up on you

This procedure assumes that the infrared device is connected to a serial port on your computer. Use this procedure only if Windows did not automatically install an infrared device when you turned on your computer. Typically, Universal Serial Bus (USB), PCMCIA, and other Plug and Play-compliant infrared devices are automatically detected and installed.

To add a new infrared device:
    01. Click Start, point to Control Panel, and then click Add Hardware.
    02. The Add Hardware Wizard starts.
    03. Click Next.
    04. Click Yes, I have already connected the hardware, and then click Next.
    05. In the Installed hardware list, click Add a new hardware device, and then click Next.
    06. Click Install the hardware that I manually select from a list (Advanced), and then click Next.
    07. In the Common hardware types box, click Infrared devices, and then click Next.

    Do one of the following:

    01. If you do not have an installation disk for the infrared device, click the manufacturer of the device in the Manufacturer list, click the infrared device that best matches your hardware in the Infrared Device list, and then click Next.

    02. If you have a manufacturer's installation disk for a compatible driver, click Have Disk. Insert the manufacturer's installation disk into the appropriate drive, and then click Next.
Follow the instructions that are displayed on the remaining pages of the Add Hardware Wizard to install the infrared device.

View the Properties of an Infrared Device
To use this procedure, there must be an infrared device installed on your computer. Note that the settings for the infrared device are configured automatically when you install the device, and typically do not have to be changed. To view the properties of an infrared device:

    01. Click Start, click Control Panel, and then click Wireless Link.

    02. Click the Hardware tab, click the infrared device for which you want to view properties, and then click Properties.

Configure a Serial Port for Infrared Communication
Your computer must support an infrared mode for a serial port. Use this procedure to install an IrDA transceiver that is provided by the computer manufacturer. To configure a serial port for infrared communication:

    01. Start the BIOS configuration utility for your computer. Note that the method for starting the BIOS configuration utility varies from one computer to another. For many computers, you can start the BIOS configuration utility by pressing a function key that is indicated during the computer startup process. Some computers require that you start by using special configuration disks. For more information about how to enter BIOS Setup, see your computer manufacturer's documentation.

    02. In the peripheral or serial port configuration section, change the mode to IrDA or Infrared.

    Troubleshooting
Installing an IrDA transceiver disables the serial port. Do not attach a serial IrDA transceiver to a serial port.

    Gmail On Your Mobile

Ever since i joined Gmail I've been waiting impatiently for POP3 support so i could access my mail on my phone. Earlier this month Google finally came up with the goods and his week POP3 support was finally turned on for my account (Gmail were giving it to people periodically). So how easy is it to get Gmail on your phone?
    The Settings
    Native E-mail Client
    ProfiMail
    E-Mail Sender
    WAP Access
    Gmail Atom Feed

NOTE: You have to enable POP3 Access in your Gmail settings. There are instructions here if you are unsure how to do this

UPDATE1: See Native E-Mail Client and Gmail Atom Feed
UPDATE2: Consync have a good guide to getting Gmail on mobiles running Windows Mobile
UPDATE3: LonelyCat have solved the problem with Port 465 in release 1.31 of ProfiMail. If you are using Version 1.31 or later, then use Port 465 instead of Port 587

    The Settings
The setting for Gmail are as follows:
Incoming Mail Server (POP3): pop.gmail.com on Port 995
Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP): smtp.gmail.com on Port 587 (Note: Port 465 didn't seem to work)
UPDATE: LonelyCat have solved the problem with Port 465 in release 1.31 of ProfiMail. If you are using Version 1.31 or later, then use Port 465 instead of Port 587
    SMTP requires Authorisation
Both of these require SSL to be activated

    Native E-mail Client
It immediately became apparent after trying various setting, that i couldn't use the native e-mail client that came with the 6600 (in MESSAGES) as it didn't support SMTP authentication (as required by Gmail). A quick search of the better Nokia forums found that this indeed was the case. So the answer was to find a third-party application that would support SMTP authentication.
UPDATE: This problem seems to only effect the 6600 and the N-Gage. The Native E-mail Clients for both the 7610 and the 6630 work as long as you put "SECURITY" to "ON" which enables the SSL

    ProfiMail
Supports Nokia 7650/3650/N-Gage/6600, Siemens SX1, SendoX, Sony Ericsson Pxxx, Motorola A92x,A1000
For me the obvious choice was ProfiMail which i had heard good things about. The latest version (V1.23) had fixed all the minor issues the initial releases had and is perhaps one of the best e-mail client around. Once i had paid for the program and registered, i started to set up the phone.

Setting the account up on ProfiMail couldn't be easier. Open up the application and it will automatically as you if you want to set up a new account. If this doesn't come up click MENU-ACCOUNT-NEW. This should being up the account set-up screen (left). Under "Account Name" enter what you would like the account to be called (e.g. Gmail) followed by your e-mail address and "Display Name" (which could be the same as the Account Name). Under "Mail Server Type" make sure "POP3" is chosen. Then "Incoming Mail Server" is "pop.gmail.com" and "Outgoing Mail Server" is "smtp.gmail.com". Under user name fill in your full Gmail address (i.e. username@gmail.com) followed by the password. If you don't click "Get Entire Message" ProfiMail will only download the message headers not the whole e-mail, the choice is yours.

Now click on "Advanced Settings" which will bring up a new set-up menu (right). Leave "Secure Pop Login" unchecked and check "SMTP Authentication" (as seen on the right). Leave the SMTP username and password blank. Under "POP3 Port" put "995" and under "SMTP Port" put "587" (UPDATE: LonelyCat have solved the problem with Port 465 in release 1.31 of ProfiMail. If you are using Version 1.31 or later, then use Port 465 instead of Port 587). Finally check both "Use SSL for POP3" and "Use SSL for SMTP". Then click "Done" twice and you're finished, ProfiMail can connect to your account and you can send e-mail as well.

    E-Mail Sender
If for some reason you only want to send e-mails from your phones or want a cheaper alternative, E-Mail Sender could be an option. This e-mail client does support SMTP Authentication but can only send e-mails not receive them. This is ideal for people who only want to use their e-mail to Moblog or only need one way communication.

    WAP Access
    Supports any WAP enabled phone

Now for those of you who don't have a phone that can install ProfiMail and/or don't have native e-mail clients (or perhaps people who don't want to pay $20 for ProfiMail even though its worth every cent!), don't despair!
there is also a way of checking your Gmail account via WAP thanks to GmailWireless.com. The people at GmailWireless have used code from the Gmail-Mobile Project to set up a page which you can visit via WAP on your mobile and log directly into your Gmail account. I've tried this out personally (left and right) and it works like a charm. All you have to do is go to their main page and register, it's as easy as that!

    Gmail Atom Feed
A while back Gmail added an Atom Feed as a new feature which lead to the creation of Gmail Checker. It's a great little Midlet that runs on the 7610 and the 6600 (UPDATE: Also supports Sony Ericsson P900/P910 (when the Equifax certificate is installed), Orange C500 and the Treo 600). However, Gmail seem to have removed the Atom Feeds for some reason! This is a good option to keep in mind however as they might include Atom Feeds in the final release of Gmail if indeed they don't reintroduce it sooner. (UPDATE: It seems Gmail haven't removed their Atom Feed feature, but it is only working for a limited number of people. Check your own Gmail Features to see if it's available to you)

    Bluetooth Connection

There are several methods you can use to set up bluetooth so that your phone can communicate with your computer. This is highly recommended; if you routinely need to connect your phone to your computer, please buy a bluetooth dongle. It will save you much aggravation in the long run by circumventing the need to use the DKU-2 usb cable provided with the phone. The DKU-2 cable is usable, but intensely frustrating for everything except very occasional phonebook synchronizations, and one-time application installation. This guide will demonstrate how to install bluetooth on your PC, and pair your computer with your phone such that they may communicate.

    Installing bluetooth on your PC:

First, you will require bluetooth to be installed properly on your PC. This will not be an issue if your computer came with bluetooth installed, but for those who purchased a USB Bluetooth dongle, please follow exactly the instructions provided with the device.

The most important piece of advice for computers running Windows XP SP2 and above, is to install the drivers provided with the bluetooth dongle before plugging in the dongle. If you do not do this, you will be using the standard microsoft bluetooth drivers, which is generally slower and less compatible that Widcomm drivers. If you do want to use this, Microsoft has provided a user guide. Also, if you install Service Pack 2 over your existing Windows XP installation, read these two help articles if you have having problems with bluetooth device detection or connectivity issues. [One], [two]

If you have unfortunately plugged in the bluetooth device before installing the provided drivers, unplug the bluetooth device, and do the following:
Click Start, click Run, type %windir%\inf in the Open box, and then click OK.
Right-click Bth.inf, and then click Rename.
Rename Bth.inf to Bth.bak, and then press ENTER.
    Install the third-party Bluetooth driver.

Also, you should have no problems installing bluetooth if you're using a Mac, because it's generally preinstalled, and the Mac drivers generally don't have installation issues.

Connecting your computerr to your phone using PC Suite:

    1. On your Nokia 7160: Select the folder "Connect" and then "Bluetooth".

    2. Make sure "Bluetooth" is On and "My Phone's Visibility" is "Shown to all". Remember what is in "My Bluetooth Name" - or edit it to one of your choice.

    3. Open Nokia PC Suite, then open "Manage Connections."

    4. Select "Bluetooth (Microsoft)" or "Bluetooth (WIDCOMM)" as appropriate.

    5. Click "Configure" then "Next"

    6. Select whatever you wrote in "My Bluetooth Name." Click "Next."

    7. Note the number in "Passcode", Click "Next."

    8. Read "General Notes" below

Connect your computer to your phone without PC Suite (Widcomm Drivers):

    1. On your Nokia 7160: Select the folder "Connect" and then "Bluetooth".

    2. Make sure "Bluetooth" is On and "My Phone's Visibility" is "Shown to all". Remember what is in "My Bluetooth Name" - or edit it to one of your choice.

    3. Right click on the Bluetooth Icon in the system tray; click "Bluetooth Setup Wizard"

    4. Select "I want to find a specific Bluetooth device and configure how this computer will use its services." Click "Next"

    5. Select whatever you wrote in "My Bluetooth Name." Click "Next."

    6. Type in a PIN Code. 123 will do. Click "Initiate Pairing." "Passcode for Tosh" will appear on your phone. Type in the PIN Code. Do this reasonably quickly, because there is a timeout.

    7. Select whatever services you require, then click "Finish."

    8. Read "General Notes" below.
